Instant Messengers

I'm sure most of you at one time or another have used an instant messenger to chat with your friends and family.  But have you realized the potential of advertising your site through these?  I hope you have.  Now I don't mean spamming your friends in the least bit.  All I mean is for you to post links to your websites in your profiles.  That way any of the people you chat with, most likely at some point, will look at your profile and notice your links.  And get ready for a conversation about your sites with them, which is the time for you to just casually self promote.  Here's some links to my profiles so that you can see how simple it is. (Please don't abuse these privileges by spamming or harassing me.)

Social Networking Sites

I imagine that all of us have been or still are a member of one of these types of sites, you may not even realize that's what they're called.  These are great for the same type of marketing I talked about above; marketing to people who know you first.  I'll show you a few different sites I post my links, but please don't spam or harass me on these either.  I'm only showing these as examples and for promotion of my sites, not myself.
  • Myspace Profile - I put Banner Ads on my profile to link to my pages instead of a normal text link, I'll go over that later in these series of info pages.  I'll also go into more detail with Myspace Marketing later on.  You can post links on your profile, in your blog or in bulletins if you want.

      Free Advertising Forum

If you join this handy advertising site there's a section where you can post your links.  Once you sign up, which is of course free to join, and then log in, click the "Add Link" link in about the middle of the page.  You'll have to click one of the other links then and it'll let you submit your site.  Just give a short description, under 75 characters, and the link to your site and you're set.  This will hopefully get you some quality traffic to your site.  You have to wait till your link isn't on the list anymore before you can enter another link.

With any forum, or even your email, you should put your site links in your signature.  That way, every time you post in the forum, people will see your link.  Plus, it's a link to your site from a decent ranking page, so that will raise your search engine ranking.  And lastly, every post you make in that forum will show up in search engine results eventually, including your links in your signature.

I hope I've sparked some ideas on how you can come up with a great linking strategy for your sites.  You can also post links all over any other pages you have and if you have a site map for all your pages, make sure to post there too.  I find it handy to make a little checklist for your site promotion in a word processor and then every time you have a new site you want to promote just go through the list and make sure you're putting your links in all those spots.  You can use my site as your checklist if you like.  All of the information on my own personal checklist for website promotion is going to be put on here.  Just surf around my pages and you'll find everything I do to get the word out on my sites.

No matter what kind of website you have, you're going to need links of some kind to it in order for you to get traffic to your page.  Having links all over the internet to your site, whether you, your friends, or just random people put them there, will raise the popularity and it will look a lot more important to search engines.
There are so many different places to put links.  I'll give you some ideas by showing you examples of places I post my own links.  To get started it's always a good idea to post links in places where your own friends will see them.  They obviously will trust your links more than just some random link on the web; which means you'll get some traffic.
